Recent Broadway showstoppers and famed dance duo Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy have cancelled their upcoming nuptials, according to E! news. The ballroom pros, who spent their summer steaming up Broadway's Longacre Theatre as part of the opening night cast in Burn the Floor, have ended their engagement after nearly a year together.
"I am confirming that they did indeed break up," a rep for Smirnoff told E!
Smirnoff and Chmerkovskiy have spent the past four years competing on the hit TV reality competition series Dancing with the Stars and began dating shortly after Smirnoff's split with Broadway alum and former DWTS competitor Mario Lopez. The pair were engaged in December 2008 with an eye on a June 2010 wedding, but recently extended their engagement due to demanding schedules.
The duo joined the cast of Burn the Floor for its first three weeks beginning July 25, playing their last performance on August 16. They were replaced with So You Think You Can Dance alums Anya Garnis and Pasha Kovalev on August 18. Burn the floor, which officially opened on August 2, recently announced it would extend its run through January 2010.
In a true "last dance" twist, the split Smirnoff and Chmerkovskiy are scheduled to dance together at the 2009 Emmy Awards ceremony on September 20.
